British Isles	Британские острова
The British Isles are a group of islands lying off the north-west coast of the continent of Europe. This archipelago includes two major islands — Great Britain and Ireland and about six thousand small islands.	Британские острова – это группа островов, лежащих у северо-восточного побережья Европейского континента. Этот архипелаг включает 2 основных острова – Великобританию и Ирландию, и около 6 тысяч маленьких островов.
Two independent states — the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland — occupy the territory of the main islands: England is situated in the south and the center of Great Britain, Scotland and Wales take up the north and the west of the island, respectively, and both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are located on the island of the same name — Ireland. As for the relief, there are no very high mountains on these islands. The most mountainous part is Scotland where we can find the highest peak of isles — Ben Nevis. Its height is 1,343 meters. Another high mountain is situated in Wales. It’s called Snowdon and rises to the height of 1,085 metres above the level of the sea.	Что касается рельефа, на этих островах нет очень высоких гор. On the islands there are many beautiful lakes. The largest one is Lough Neagh in Ireland with an area of 381 square kilometres. There are also several long rivers among which the lengthy is Shannon. The forests and the meadows occupy a large part of the islands. They are considered to be important natural resources and the British do their best to save them for future. The climate of the British Isles is mild. It means that it’s not very cold in winter and not very hot in summer. In winter, as a rule there is no ice on the lakes and the rivers, and snow never lies on the ground for a long. Speaking about the climate, I can’t help saying that all parts of the British Islands get a lot of rain in all seasons and the weather is generally changeable.	Климат Британских островов мягкий. Это значит, что зимой не очень холодно, а летом не очень жарко. Зимой, как правило, на озерах и реках нет льда, а снег никогда не лежит долго (т.е. обычно быстро тает). Говоря о климате, я не могу не сказать, что во всех частях Британских островов на протяжении года выпадает много осадков и погода обычно изменчива.
Four main ethnic groups live on the islands. They are the English, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish. Each group has its own language and culture.	На островах проживает этнические группы. Это англичане, шотландцы, жители Уэльса и ирландцы. У каждой группы есть свой язык и культура.
The population of the United Kingdom is over 61 million people. A little more than 7 million people live in London and the suburbs. Most of the British prefer to live in cities although on the islands there are many beautiful provincial towns and villages.	Население Соединенного Королевства – свыше 61 млн. человек. Немногим больше 7 миллионов человек живет в Лондоне и его пригородах. Большинство британцев предпочитает жить в больших городах, хотя на островах много красивых провинциальных городков и деревень.
The state is highly industrialized. Lots of products such as clothes, foodstuff, planes and cars are made in and around London. Different equipment, cars, lorries, TV- and radio sets are produced in Birmingham, and in Manchester we will find plants, producing textile, computers and electronics. As for the industry, coal-mining is a typical branch for South Wales, although many of the mines have been closed here. Another small industrial area is in North Wales. Here we can find plants-producers of steel and chemicals.	Что касается промышленности, добыча угля – характерная отрасль для Южного Уэльса, хотя много шахт здесь было закрыто. And the main ship-building centers are, of course, London, Glasgow in Scotland and Belfast in Northern Ireland. Lately a very big shipyard has been built on one of the islands of Northern Ireland. Сereals and another crop plants are grown in different parts of the country: wheat – in the east of England, vegetables – everywhere, but especially in the south. And some kinds of fruit can grow only in the southern parts of the islands, where in summer the temperature is higher and there are much more sunny days.	Зерновые и другие сельскохозяйственные культуры выращиваются в разных частях страны: пшеница – на востоке Англии, овощи – повсеместно, но особенно на юге. А некоторые виды фруктов могут произрастать только в южных частях островов, где летом температура выше и гораздо больше солнечных дней.
